The spring 2022 Fox Fridays series will feature a total of 16 workshops, beginning February 11. Open to all members of the WashU community, this free, low-stress workshop series introduces tools, resources, processes, and ideas across spaces within the Sam Fox School.
While the overarching focus of the workshops—to provide an ideal platform for play and experimentation that may open new pathways to enhance student and faculty work—remains the same, there will be a few new wrinkles to this semester’s offerings:
Fox Fridays Basics
This new subset of workshops is geared toward students who want to brush up on some of the basic technical skills that are critical to creating strong work in the studio, such as hand drafting, physical model building, and using the Adobe suite. A total of five Fox Fridays Basics workshops will be offered this semester. On February 11, options include Hand Drafting Techniques and Applications, Rhino, and Adobe Suite for Beginners. Offerings on February 25 include Physical Model Making and Digital Rendering.
Student-Led Workshops
For the first time, current Sam Fox School undergraduate and graduate students will have the opportunity to lead some of the workshops as instructors. “This change was driven by interest from students across our programs,” said associate professor Jonathan Hanahan, director of Fox Fridays. “Our students have a ton of expertise in unique areas, and they eager to find opportunities to share their knowledge. Fox Fridays are a great avenue for them to share their skills with members of our WashU community.”
Corresponding Public Lectures
A pair of public lectures will be held in conjunction with two of this semester’s workshop. Brian Richter—a designer, artist, and visiting assistant professor of architecture at the University of Kentucky—will deliver a public lecture at 6p on February 17, followed by his workshop on Dynamic 3D Rendering with Maya, Twinmotion & Quixel the next day. Artist Hope Ginsburg, professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, will deliver a public lecture at 12p on April 1, presented in collaboration with Laumeier Sculpture Park, that will lead into her two-day Feltmaking workshop.
