Fox Fridays: Intro to the Wood Lathe
Students will get an introduction to turning on the wood lathe. Basic safety, setup, tooling, and introductory techniques will be covered. Materials will be provided. REQUIRED: Enrolled students must wear sturdy close-toed shoes to the workshop.
Students will produce a simple turned wooden form.
Cross-disciplinary Connections: The concept of rotating a work piece to generate symmetrical form is central to many disciplines. Wheel-thrown pottery, machining, pattern-making for foundry, glass-work, watchmaking, metal spinning, and analog audio recording all utilize this technological principle. Lathe work (now primarily computer controlled) remains a cornerstone of global industrial production in a variety of fields. However, many artists, designers, and machinists still find manual turning to be integral to the design and prototyping process.
Connected Courses: Metal Foundry course and the Furniture Design course led by senior lecturer Lindsey Stouffer.
Instructor: Bryce Olen Robinson is a sculptor and installation artist from Ferguson, Missouri. Robinson’s practice seeks to reveal and frame the structures, histories, and politics that have defined and redefined his community. www.bryceolenrobinson.com
