Mariah, a mobile app experience designed by assistant professor Heather Snyder Quinn and Adam DelMarcelle and developed by Flor Salatino, will be featured in the exhibition Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest. Using augmented reality, the app allows visitors to point their phone camera at historical sites of protest across the San Francisco Bay Area and learn how they relate to objects in the show.
Mariah was previously featured in The Washington Post for its engagement with objects in the Met’s Sackler Wing, where it reveals haunting links to the opioid crisis.
Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest will celebrate design that empowers communities and fights oppression. It is the second exhibition presented by Letterform Archive, a nonprofit center for inspiration, education, publishing, and community. The exhibition opens July 23, 2022 in San Francisco.
The hardcover exhibition catalog features custom typefaces by senior lecturer Ben Kiel and Jesse Ragan of XYZ Type.
