The WashU Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is the recipient of the inaugural CityStudioSTL Student Award for an extended exhibition of Add/Remove/Improve.
Conceived as the chapter’s 2015 contribution to PARK(ing) Day—a global event where citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to transform metered parking spaces into temporary public places—the public installation asks community members to consider what they would add, remove, or improve in their community. The original installation, held September 18, 2015, on the Delmar Loop, prompted nearly 200 visitors, residents, and curious citizens to write their ideas on colorful helium balloons, creating a dynamic environment that visualized their desired changes.
The CityStudioSTL funding, totaling $500, will contribute to additional installations of Add/Remove/Improve in spring 2016, including at the Sam Fox School’s Lewis Center building in University City and at an additional community site yet to be determined. The newly shared ideas will be collected and synthesized into an open letter that addresses key topics that emerge, in the hopes of stimulating a wider community dialogue.
