Igor Marjanović will become the William Ward Watkin Dean of Rice Architecture, effective July 1, 2021. View the public announcement from Rice University.
As many of you know, Rice Architecture is also a top-ranked program, and this is a very exciting and prestigious position for Igor. As much as we will miss him, we believe his hire also reflects well on our school and know we will have many opportunities for continued collaboration between our two institutions.
Igor came to Washington University as an assistant professor from Iowa State University in 2006. Over the past 15 years, he successfully achieved promotion to associate professor with tenure, then to full professor, and was appointed the JoAnne Stolaroff Cotsen Professor of Architecture in 2018. Igor also has led the undergraduate architecture program since 2011 and played a key role in the development of our Florence program. His research integrates the teaching of studio and theory with historical scholarship on architectural pedagogy and practice, examining the role of drawings, exhibitions, and publications in the emergence of international architectural culture. With Jan Howard, he curated Drawing Ambience: Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association—the exhibition, which debuted at the Kemper Art Museum and the RISD Museum before traveling internationally, reflects both his scholarly interests and the interdisciplinary spirit of the Sam Fox School.
Of course, the news of Igor’s departure is bittersweet and we will have big shoes to fill, as he is an outstanding scholar, and an exceptional teacher and administrator. Please join us in congratulating Igor, thanking him for his tremendous service to our school, and wishing him well in his new endeavor.
Best,
Carmon Colangelo
