Design proposals for wayfinding signage for the Freedom Arts and Education Center.
Communication Design students Tolu Atoyebi, Rachel Jackson, Madeline Montoya, and ZeCora Smith received the CityStudioSTL Student Award to continue their partnership with the Freedom Arts and Education Center in the City of St. Louis. The students developed a proposal for a comprehensive branding system for the Center in the course Communication Design: Design for Social Impact, taught by assistant professor Penina Acayo Laker. With their award, the students will print materials they designed and host a workshop at the Center, where participants will produce signage and artwork to be displayed throughout the facility.
The Freedom Arts and Education Center is owned by the Apostles Church Community Center in the Lewis Place neighborhood. It provides quality, diverse arts education throughout St. Louis, with a focus on young people living on the north and west sides of St. Louis. The Center empowers children to become highly creative, literate, passionate, independent thinkers. It also serves as a social gathering space for families.
The students were challenged to create a cohesive brand identity for the Freedom Arts and Education Center. Their goal was to help publicize the Center’s expansive programming and to communicate its role in the Lewis Place neighborhood, where it is located, and in the greater St. Louis community. In their branding system, the students emphasized unity, reliability, inclusivity, community, trust, ownership, and fun. The design deliverables included a mark, an informational packet, business cards, postcards, wayfinding signage, and collateral materials to support the mission of Freedom Arts and Education Center.
The students also developed a workshop, which is planned for this spring, where participants will create their own artworks to be exhibited at the Center. The activity is designed to make visitors feel more at home by giving them greater ownership over the building and the space.
