Roy Uptain “Surveillance Erotica”, 2025
The Time Based + Media Art, the newest BFA in Visual Art concentration area in studio art program at Sam Fox School, is proud to announce the opening of 2025 Media Artist in Residence exhibition of new work by Roy Uptain, MFA ‘25, produced during the March residency on April 18.
Roy Uptain is a post-conceptual artist and experimental filmmaker pursuing an MFA in Visual Art at the Sam Fox School of Art & Design. Rooted in a multidisciplinary practice, his work investigates the interlocking systems of propaganda, surveillance, and social control that have shaped his personal history and cultural surroundings. Raised in the intersections of a fundamentalist evangelical cult, Wyoming’s hypermasculine cowboy culture, and the structured environment of the U.S. Army as a mass communication specialist, Uptain interrogates the mechanisms of power that define belief, behavior, and identity.
The exhibition will be on display April 18 - 21 in the Media Studio. The opening reception is April 18 at 2 p.m.
About the Residency
The Time Based + Media Art area annual residency offers one selected graduate student pursuing an MFA in Visual Art full access to the media studio during spring break. Over a period of ten days, the selected artist creates a digital time-based project that may include a performance component. The residency also includes a public installation of the project, scheduled one weekend in April. To learn more about the residency, contact Monika Weiss.
