Assistant Professor Chris Dingwall’s collaborative work, “Chicago Designs: Teaching Community-Based Histories,” was selected as a runner-up in Design Incubation’s annual Communication Design Educator Awards. Dingwall, along with J. Dakota Brown and Amira Hegazy of the University of Illinois Chicago, and Bess Williamson of North Carolina State University, organized the weeklong workshop for university educators last summer. The workshop invited participants to explore museums, archives, and community sites like the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum and the Vivian G. Harsh Collection for African American History, led by design history experts. They also met with contemporary designers, artists, and activists historically less likely to be represented in museum collections. Following site visits and discussions, attendees developed teaching resources to share online through the Design Museum of Chicago.
