Professor Patty Heyda’s book, “Radical Atlas of Ferguson, USA,” was shortlisted for the 2024 On the Brinck Book Award and Lecture.
In the book released by Belt Publishing in August 2024, Heyda uses more than 100 maps to chart the often-opaque forces that have shaped Ferguson and other first-ring American suburbs since the early 1980s. Heyda explores how tax incentives, housing codes, roadways, policing, philanthropy, even landscaping — all can work against the fundamental betterment of residents’ lives.
The On the Brinck Book Awards program was created in 2020 by the University of New Mexico School of Architecture + Planning in honor of John Brinckerhoff Jackson, a prolific writer and influential figure in the development of the field of cultural landscape studies, merging analysis of natural, built, and human landscapes.
The 2024 jury included Sunil Bald, Felipe Correa, Margaret Crawford, Charles L. Davis III, Catherine Page Harris, Cathy Lang Ho, and Thaïsa Way.
