Aaron Schump

Aaron Schump is an architect and educator based in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and his Master in Architecture from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, where he received an Honor Award for Excellence in Design upon graduation. He has practiced in Los Angeles with Marmol Radziner + Associates and in New York City with SPaN, Stonely Pelsinski, and Neukomm Architects.

Schump has operated his own office, AS//A, since 2012, beginning in Manhattan, Kansas, while serving as an Associate Professor at Kansas State University, and since 2018 in St. Louis, concurrently with teaching at Washington University, where he is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

Schump’s practice and teaching center on tectonic craft and the discipline of architectural practice, with a particular focus on architect-led development, an approach in which the architect assumes the role of developer to guide projects from site acquisition through construction. In the classroom, he uses this framework to introduce students to the concerns that shape a project beyond design, including zoning, entitlements, financing, lending, and project management, giving them a working knowledge of the forces that determine whether a design gets built.

Aaron is a registered architect in the States of Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is NCARB certified.
