John Knuteson

John Knuteson is a professional architect and educator with an interest in architectural history and theory. He has over five years of professional experience in architecture and previously practiced in Chicago.

Knuteson’s primary research interests lie in architectural drawing, media, and representation, and how these engage architectural practice through questions of agency and authorship. Previous work has centered on the physical act of drawing, the presence of the hand, and the viewer’s ability to engage spatial experience through the drawing. His master’s thesis considered the role of drawings in architectural practice in Chicago around the beginning of the twentieth century, and focused on the work of architect and delineator Marion Mahony Griffin, an important associate of Frank Lloyd Wright; and Elizabeth Kimball Nedved, an architect recognized for her drawings and watercolors.

Knuteson holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in Architectural Studies from Washington University. In addition to teaching, he is currently engaged in historical research with the St. Louis Public Library.
