Adam Hogan
Adam Hogan is an artist, cinematographer, researcher, and advocate for film and media preservation. His work engages the formal cinematic, expanded cinema, and experimental approaches to moving image and sound using the medium itself through production and development to explore how media technologies shape our perception and relationships to spaces.
As a cinematographer and director of photography, he has traveled all over the country and to many parts of the world to create images. This work spans traditional production but also includes experimental collaborations with artists, choreographers, musicians, and composers, including artist and director Mariam Ghani, artist and choreographer Erin Ellen Kelly, composers Richard Karpen and Juan Pampin, renowned violist and composer Garth Knox, the JACK Quartet, and many others. His work and collaborations have been featured in numerous national and international festivals, exhibitions, and collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, Metropolitan Museum, Berlinale, CYFEST-13, Athens Digital Arts Festival, Experimental Intermedia, DOC NYC, and more. Hogan was the director of photography for What We Left Unfinished, which saw a national theatrical release in 2021; that film and other works can be found on streaming platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and The Criterion Channel.
Along with film editor and colorist Laura Stayton, Hogan developed Artists Tapes, a collaborative project that strives to save media works, experimental films, and rare cinematic treasures through preservation, digital restoration, and migration. Publications and exhibitions include The Criterion Channel, Anthology Film Archives, Room40, Fridman Gallery, and Seattle Art Museum.
Hogan holds a PhD from the University of Washington, Seattle in Digital Arts and Experimental Media and a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art from Washington University in St. Louis. He is currently based out of Fayetteville, Arkansas, as an assistant professor of art and head of experimental media arts at the University of Arkansas.
