Brian Vitale, MArch ‘95
Principal and Managing Director, Gensler
Brian Vitale is the managing director and inspirational leader of Gensler Chicago. Named one of the 50 people “shaping Chicago’s design culture,” Vitale’s influential work has earned over 80 major design honors. Vitale attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Washington University in St. Louis. He received one of WashU’s Awards for Distinction, given each year to an alum who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their career.
Matthew Bernstine, AICP, LEED AP, MUD ‘14
Associate Director, Office for Socially Engaged Practice
Bernstine is an award-winning designer and educator who works to integrate practice, community-led design, and academic scholarship through collaborative endeavors. Examples include the creation of Peace Park, Sumner StudioLab, the award-winning Misi-Ziibi Living Delta Design Competition, and the Mobility for All by All initiative. Before coming to St. Louis, Bernstine worked for over a decade in the private sector as an urban designer and planner in New York City, San Francisco, and Charlottesville.
L. Irene Compadre, ASLA, PLA, AB ‘08 / MLA ‘12
Principal, Arbolope Studio
L. Irene Compadre, PLA, is the founding principal and design director of Arbolope Studio, an award-winning landscape architecture, urban design, and public art practice based in St. Louis. An experimental firm that prioritizes high quality design, ecological resilience, and social equity, Arbolope’s work ranges from intimate public spaces such as Love Bank Park in St. Louis, to large-scale masterplans such as the new Jefferson City Botanical Garden. Compadre holds an MLA from Washington University in St. Louis where she now teaches in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.
