Kemper Kick-Back: Resist, Reclaim, Rest
Put down your books, gather your friends, and join us for some creative self-care. Grab free snacks and journals for sketching or writing, participate in art-making and meditation workshops, and view spring exhibitions by contemporary artists Chitra Ganesh and Nicole Miller.
This event is limited to Washington University students.
Welcome to an evening of self-care activities designed to encourage rest during finals. Through guided meditations, collective art-making workshops, and an immersive sound bath, the aim of this event is to recover the practices of care to envision better futures. The Museum will become a space to think about how engaging with art can build connection with ourselves and each other.
Activities
Guided meditation: Practice slow looking, grounding, breathing exercises, and anxiety relief through recorded guided meditations at selected artworks in the permanent collection. A QR code to download the audio recordings will be available at the Welcome Desk.
Reading futures art-making workshop (5 pm): Learn about oracles as knowledge systems and their cultural importance. Create your own oracle cards following practices of visualization and manifestation, and exchange your card to make readings for each other.
Sound healing + Meditation workshop (6 pm): Experience guided breath work and seated movement practice followed by an ambient sound healing experience with the sounds of singing bowls led by artist Simiya Sudduth. The practice will close with five minutes of silent meditation. The workshop is open to all, regardless of prior experience with meditation and/or sound healing. Please wear comfortable clothing and feel free to bring comfort items to support your experience (e.g., blankets, pillows, eye masks).
