Fox Friday: Quilting - Improv Piecing
In this workshop, students will be introduced to a short history of quilting and some examples of how scraps of fabric may be reused or reordered to create beautiful patterns both symmetrical and organic. Each student will make a small sample to grasp how a finished quilt will result, as well as familiarize themselves with simple sewing. The bulk of the time together will be spent piecing - cutting scraps of fabric (provided) and sewing them together. While no sewing experience is necessary, how much a student gets done on their project will depend on how fast they want to work and whether they prefer to hand- or machine-sew.
Instructor: Jordan Geiger is an interdisciplinary artist currently teaching at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. His media include textiles, drawings, music, installation, and performance. In addition, Geiger is a meditator and hospice volunteer.
